'The worse, the better': Liberal NYT columnist makes the case for AG Matt Gaetz

While even some Republicans have flinched at the thought of confirming scandal-plagued former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to be America's top law enforcement official, liberal New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg is embracing Gaetz's nomination.

In her latest column, Goldberg makes reference to an alleged quote from communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin that states, "The worse, the better" in justifying her enthusiasm for putting Gaetz in the spotlight.

"While Trump’s choice of Gaetz to lead the Justice Department is a clear sign that his second administration will be catastrophically chaotic, vengeful and corrupt, that should never have been in doubt," she argues.

"Trump made no secret during his campaign of his desire to persecute his political enemies. Anyone he chose as attorney general would share his interest in turning the justice system into the enforcement arm of the MAGA movement. The selection of Gaetz just rips the mask off."

Goldberg says that the process of trying to ram Gaetz through the United States Senate will be particularly humiliating for many of President-elect Donald Trump's fellow Republicans who almost uniformly loathe the Florida Republican.

All of this, she said, will make Gaetz's confirmation hearing an epic fiasco for the GOP

"If Gaetz makes it all the way to the confirmation hearings, the proceedings will be a popcorn-worthy carnival of scandal and backbiting," she predicts. "Having won the presidency and both houses of Congress, Trump could have launched his new administration in an atmosphere of confident Republican unity. Instead, it will commence with the crisis, degradation and melodrama that is his natural habitat."

While Goldberg does not think anything good will come from an Attorney General Matt Gaetz, she also believe that he is chaotic enough to make the damage less than what it otherwise might be.

"The best we can hope for is that our new rulers will be stymied by incompetence, infighting and self-sabotage," she concludes. "In that respect, Gaetz may be just the man for the job."
