Melvin, Fellows head Fall Speed Order Singles
USRowing held the Fall Speed Order November 16 and 17 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. Margaret Fellows (Cambridge Boat Club), Sam Melvin (New York Athletic Club), and the pair of Camille VanderMeer and Kaitlyn Kynast (USRowing Training Center – Princeton) took first in their respective events.
The two-day regatta involved races in the women’s single, men’s single, women’s pair events with time trials on Saturday and finals on Sunday. Results for the regatta can be found on herenow.com. In the women’s single A final Fellows posted a time of 7:45.88, two seconds faster than the next finisher Savannah Brija from ARION.
New York Athletic Club’s Melvin took home the win in the men’s single with a time of 7:02.61. NYAC had two athletes qualify for the A final of the men’s single. Eliot “Finn” Putnam placed third in 7:06.87.
“Sam was first, and Eliot came in third, so it was good,” remarked NYAC coach Michael Martinov. “Teal Cohen is also with NYAC and she came fourth. Sam is transitioning from lightweight so he’s not yet a heavyweight. I thought it was good. That was a pretty good result for him. We’re done for the fall now, the next race will be Winter Speed Order in Florida.”
The women’s pair of Etta Carpenter and Holly Drapp (USTC) finished first in Saturday’s time trial but VanderMeer and Kynast excelled in the final, winning by .76 of a second in a photo finish.
Over 60 athletes from clubs that raced last weekend will look ahead to train for Winter Speed Order in Sarasota, Florida, currently scheduled for March 21-23, 2025. Find more information about USRowing National Team selection procedures at usrowing.org.
