Martin Lewis reveals the cheapest supermarket to buy a 1litre bottle of Baileys this week – and it only costs £10
MARTIN LEWIS’ MoneySavingExpert has revealed the cheapest place to bag a one litre bottle of Baileys this week ahead of Christmas.
With December just around the corner, shoppers are rushing to stock up on the boozy festive-favourite.
The weekly MoneySavingExpert newsletter revealed that the best place to buy is now Tesco, with a 1L bottle selling for just £10 with a ClubCard.
1L Baileys bottles at the supermarket are typically £22 – meaning you can get it for more than half its original price.
This offer is currently the cheapest around, with Asda, Amazon, Ocado and Sainsbury’s (with a Nectar Card) listing the item for £13.
But the Tesco offer only runs until Monday December 9, so you’ll have to be quick.
Or, you can wait to see what other deals emerge in the run up to the Christmas period.
Baileys prices are constantly changing around this time of year, with many quipping the trend “the battle of the Baileys”.
Earlier this month, Sainsbury’s Nectar Card holders could purchase the 1 litre item for £10 for a limited time.
Around this time Costco was also selling the bottles for £9.99 a pop.
And in Morrisons you could get one for just £8.50 with a More Card membership if you spent £45 or more on groceries.
These deals have now ended – but many more are expected to come back.
The team at MoneySavingExpert said: “It’s possible we’ll see more supermarkets drop the price of a litre-bottle to £10 (perhaps even a little lower) in the lead-up to Christmas.
“We’ll update readers as new Baileys offers crop up.”
Baileys is famed for its iconic sweet and milky taste, with notes of vanilla and chocolate.
You can drink it neat and cold on ice – or you can use it to make a festive cocktail.
Some people like to put it in their hot chocolate for a warm festive tipple.
It is always important to remember to compare prices before buying Baileys so you don’t miss out.
Comparison sites like Trolley are great for getting the latest updates on supermarket prices.
By searching for the specific brand, the website will compare costs based on price per 100ml.
For example, in some cases it is more cost efficient to opt for a larger 1L bottle than a 70cl bottle so you get more bang for your buck.
In Sainsbury’s, a 1L Baileys bottle which sells for £13 means you are spending £1.30 per 100ml.
Meanwhile, the 70cl bottle, which costs just £10 and might seem cheaper, actually means you are spending £1.43 per 100ml.
Therefore it helps to work out how much you are spending, compared to how much you are getting.
Other ways to keep track of the newest deals include signing up to a membership with your usual supermarket.
Clubcard and Nectar Card deals change each week, as well as the Aldi SpecialBuy ranges.
You can also keep track of a supermarket’s prices on its website or by downloading the app.
However, remember that prices can change day to day and some deals happening in store may not be visible online.
Likewise, some items may be more expensive depending on which store you’re visiting.
To locate your nearest store, go to the retailer’s website and use the Store Finder tool.
How to save money on your supermarket shop
THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.
You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.
If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.
Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.
Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.
This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.
Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.
For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.
If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.
Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
If you love Baileys but want to spend less and aren’t fussed about having the real thing, then there are plenty of dupes around.
Last year The Sun tried Bailey’s dupes from all the top supermarkets, and ranked which ones were best.
Reporter Lynsey Barber ranked Lidl Irish Cream Liqueur the highest with a nine out of 10.
This year it is selling for around £7.99 for a 1L bottle, but prices vary between stores.
Another favourite was the Aldi Ballycastle Country Cream, which costs even less at £4.99 per 70cl, so £7.13 per 1L.
The Ballycastle range also features a range of festive flavours, such as a milk chocolate clementine and a white chocolate.
These are slightly pricier at £7.49 per 70cl, but a great deal compared to Bailey’s special edition products which typically cost anywhere from £22 – and are currently unavailable to buy.
