Emporia residents to decide on new recreation center

EMPORIA (KSNT) - Emporia voters will be the ones deciding whether or not a new recreation center will be built.

Wednesday, Nov. 20 the Emporia City Commission decided to let the public get the final say on the future of a new recreation center. The facility would cost taxpayers by increasing the sales tax by a half-cent.

The project is expected to cost $59 million and includes renovations to the soccer fields.

"This brand new, state-of-the-art, rec facility will improve the health and lives of our community members," Emporia City Manager Trey Cocking said. "In addition, it's really going to be family-centric, and it will give young folks a place to go and a place to belong."

This decision will come before voters in an election in March, 2025. If the vote passes, the projected is scheduled to be complete by 2027.
