ACC Roundup - Virginia Tech Loses At Home, Stanford Wins

That’s gotta hurt

In Wednesday’s ACC Action, Virginia Tech fell to Jacksonville 74-64 and Stanford slipped by 70-63.

Is it too early to ask if Virginia Tech is in trouble? The Hokies took awhile to put South Carolina Upstate away, winning 93-74, Winthrop stayed within six points at 58-52 and Penn State smoked them by 86-64.

And Jacksonville? That’s a bit embarrassing, honestly.

Two starters were held to three points: former Blue Devil Jaden Schutt had one trey while Tyler Johnson hit one basket and one free throw.

Virginia Tech hit 6-18 from behind the line, just 41 percent overall and a weak 12-20 from the free throw line.

Let’s face it, that’s pretty weak. The Hokies also had 16 turnovers.

It was just not a sterling performance. The talent might be down but this was Jacksonville, out of the Atlantic Sun. Fans won’t be happy about it.

Meanwhile, Stanford, a pretty mediocre team itself, so far anyway, struggled with Norfolk State: this was a three-point game with 2:00 left.

Maxine Raynaud continues to play well with 20 points and 10 boards. Former Blue Devil Jaylen Blakes had 18 points, though most of it (10-12) came from the line. Otherwise he shot just 3-11, including 2-8 from deep.

Oziyah Sellers had seven points in the last three minutes to bail the Cardinal out.

Stanford shot just 33.9 percent overall and 23.5 percent from behind the line. MEAC teams aren’t supposed to nearly beat a Power Conference team the road. At least Stanford held on.

It’s a busy Thursday with Miami hosting Drake, Syracuse at Texas, Radford taking on the Tigers in Littlejohn, Virginia at Tennessee and Air Force at Colorado.

At least it’s an interesting slate. Let’s see what happens.
