Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) has launched its Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI) program to help industrial and manufacturing facilities in the province reduce energy costs, grow organizational skills and capacity building, and help cover the cost of capital retrofits for emissions reducing technologies.

The $50 million program, with funding provided by the Government of Alberta and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), aims to target industrial sectors such as agriculture, forestry, mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction, utilities, construction, manufacturing, transportation, waste management, and more.

The program is designed to provide industrial and manufacturing facilities with knowledge, expertise, and training in energy management and aims to help increase profitability by reducing energy costs, growing organizational skills and capacity building, and helping cover the cost of capital retrofits. It will also help the province’s industrial and manufacturing sectors increase competitiveness, improve energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions until March 2027.

The SEMI program is designed to support industrial, commercial, or manufacturing facilities owned or leased by the participant, located in Alberta. Eligible facilities may also include those involved in energy-intensive processes that physically or chemically transform materials or substances into new products.

All participants are required to first undergo a Facility Readiness Assessment (FRA) to help identify and recommend further eligible SEMI activities. The FRA will provide a detailed energy assessment that includes time series analysis, energy use disaggregation, energy modeling, and benchmarking of energy performance against industry standards.

“Alberta’s industrial facilities are essential to our economy, and they deserve the best programs to ensure their success. By investing in ERA’s SEMI program through the TIER fund, we are helping Alberta’s industrial facilities boost their bottom line and increase their competitiveness while promoting energy management for the benefit of all Albertans,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Government of Alberta.
