St. John the Evangelist Cathedral to reopen Sunday after renovations

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- After being closed for seven months for preservation and restoration, the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette will open its doors this weekend, according to church spokesperson Molly McCracken.

"The Cathedral was riddled with moisture issues resulting in extensive interior plaster damage and peeling paint," McCracken said. "The new decorative scheme was designed to honor the original 1930s design while adding special elements to glorify their patron, St. John the Evangelist."

Those elements included stencils illustrating the quill and ink, as well as, designs featuring the eagle and scrolls. Also included in the preservation was a full interior and exterior waterproofing, reinstalling the church’s original altar rails, upgrading the lighting system, installing new sound system, repairing and strengthening pews, preserving stained glass and stripping and polishing the floors.

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be held this Sunday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the occasion, McCracken said.
