Marin rain totals swell ahead of pause in storm

With another drenching on Friday, parts of Marin County were absorbing nearly a foot of rain from the heavy storm system that arrived midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

By Friday afternoon, the aggregate rainfall totals since Wednesday included 11.74 inches in Point Reyes Station, 11 inches in Kentfield, 10.56 inches in San Anselmo and 10.45 inches on Mount Tamalpais, said Brayden Murdock, a meteorologist for the agency. Other gauges measured 9.74 inches in San Rafael and 6.31 inches in Novato.

The Marin County Fire Department and the Department of Public Works reported no major damage from the storm.

Burdock said the county would have a break in the rain Saturday afternoon, followed by persistent showers from late Saturday to Wednesday. The last stretch is expected to produce 1 to 2 inches, he said.

In Sonoma County, Santa Rosa received more than 7 inches of rain Wednesday and totaled 12 inches during the three-day period ending at 2 p.m. Friday.

That total not only equals more than one-third of the city’s average yearly precipitation of 32 inches in just three days, but also comes after the city had the highest two-day rainfall total, 9.74 inches, for any month since records began there in 1902.

Elsewhere in the Bay Area, about 500 flights were delayed by late Friday afternoon at San Francisco International Airport — about a third of all flights — and more than 60 were canceled. The airports in Oakland and San Jose had a combined total of nearly 100 delayed flights with only a handful of cancellations.
