Really? Latest Popular Critique Of Patriots Patently Ridiculous

It’s got to be exhausting coming up with reasons to be upset with the Patriots.

New England has provided plenty of opportunities for frustration lately, whether it be suspect roster-building decisions, constant on-field blunders or avoidable off-field issues. Let’s not just fall in love with dumping on the organization for every single move they make, though.

I’m looking at you, Bill Simmons.

Simmons — a diehard Boston sports fan and founder of The Ringer — hasn’t been afraid to share his frustrations this season, and used a reported deal between D.J. Humphries and the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday to whine once again.

“This makes me mad,” Simmons wrote on X. “The Pats have a (expletive) of cap space, a lousy O-line, a fantastic rookie QB and the ability to take creative gambles for someone like this. It’s a cheap franchise that pretends they aren”t cheap. They”re cheap.”

Yes, there’s technically a chance that the only reason Humphries didn’t sign with New England is because he wasn’t offered enough money. It’s not very likely, though!

Why would Humphries, a veteran player who has amassed over $80 million in his career but never won a playoff game, ever choose the Patriots over the two-time defending champs? Did we not think of that? New England isn’t a destination. Humphries had zero reason even to entertain an offer from anyone other than a contender and likely didn’t.

The Patriots reportedly were in touch with Humphries, but that conversation probably lasted all of eight seconds.

“Hey D.J., this is Eliot Wolf with the New Eng…”

Humphries just joined a team that likely will use him down the stretch on their way to another appearance in the AFC Championship. No, he probably wasn’t interested in the Patriots, so let’s not dump on them for it and use some common sense instead.
