David Pleat thinks Spurs should bite the bullet and sell key player

David Pleat suggests that Tottenham should be pragmatic rather than emotional by cashing in on one of their key men at the end of this season.

Tottenham star’s curious contract situation

Most of us were expecting Tottenham to offer Heung-min Son a new long-term deal but instead, reports indicate that the North London club have decided to simply activate the one-year extension for the time being, thus taking his deal to 2026 (Florian Plettenberg).

That perhaps suggests that the Spurs hierarchy are being cautious about committing big wages to the forward, who will be 33 years of age next summer.

It was reported earlier this month that several Saudi Pro League clubs are eyeing a big-money move for the Tottenham captain next summer (TBR Football).

David Pleat says it might be time to let Son go

Son continues to be one of Tottenham‘s most important players, having managed six goal contributions in eight Premier League games this season, despite suggestions of a potential decline.

However, Pleat believes that it is important to recognise when the ideal time is to let certain players go, suggesting that next summer might be the moment to part ways with the South Korean.

The former Tottenham manager said on The Joy of Football podcast about the forward: “To recognise the time when it’s time to go. It would be fascinating to see this season at the end, which has a few months to go, what Tottenham do with Son.

“There’s a lot of talk about him getting an extra year. But I just wonder whether, if they can agree it with another club, might be the best time to maximise on that. Just my opinion.”

Tottenham will not consider selling Son

Son’s powers have still not waned, with the attacker continuing to demonstrate his quality in the final third.

One fully expects Tottenham to offer him a long-term extension before the end of the season as he remains one of the club’s most important players while his leadership is also crucial for this young Spurs squad.

Additionally, off the pitch, the club also have some commercial considerations, with the forward’s superstar status back in Korea being very useful for Spurs’ brand.
