AP poll: Longhorns stay No. 3, Aggies tumble with Lone Star Showdown coming up

AUSTIN (KXAN) —Texas and Texas A&M will clash for the first time in 13 years Saturday night with the winner advancing to the Southeastern Conference championship game, and they'll both be ranked in the latest Associated Press Top 25 when they kick it off.

The Longhorns held at No. 3 following a 31-14 win over Kentucky while the Aggies tumbled five spots to No. 20 after a wild 43-41 loss in four overtimes to Auburn. The winner of the Lone Star Showdown (6:30 p.m. Saturday, ABC) at Kyle Field will play Georgia in the SEC championship game in Atlanta on Dec. 7.

The Tigers' home victory over Texas A&M capped a chaotic day in the SEC, with three unranked teams upset ranked teams. Florida beat Mississippi 24-17, sending the Rebels down from No. 9 to No. 15, and Oklahoma thumped Alabama 24-3, knocking the Crimson Tide down from No. 7 to No. 13.

Oregon remained the unanimous No. 1 team after an idle week and will play in the Big 12 championship game against an opponent yet to be determined. Ohio State stayed at No. 2 following a 38-15 win over Indiana and Penn State stayed at No. 4 after squeaking by Minnesota 26-25.

Notre Dame, Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, Southern Methodist and the Hoosiers round out the top 10.

Colorado and Army both dropped seven spots after losses. The Buffaloes fell to No. 23 after losing 37-21 to the Kansas Jayhawks and the Black Knights slid to No. 25 after losing 49-14 to the Fighting Irish.
