What Thanksgiving food is safe for pets to eat?

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Are you wanting to feed your furry friends some of your Thanksgiving food this holiday? If so, you may want to think twice.

From small scraps of turkey to a piece of pumpkin pie, it's important to know what is safe and not safe for your pets to eat.

KSNT 27 News spoke to Dr. Amy Guernsey-Youngblood, a veterinarian at University Veterinary Care Center, who said even the tiniest bit of Thanksgiving food can cause some major health issues for animals.

"The fattier the food I feel like the worse it is," Guernsey-Youngblood said. "It can really wreak havoc on their GI system, giving them vomiting, diarrhea, and in worse case scenarios pancreatitis, truly, and that can be a life-threatening situation.

It's not only heavily fat concentrated foods that are bad for your pets. Any and all bones are strongly discouraged.

"Also fractured teeth. We see a lot of that as well," Guernsey-Youngblood said. "People think, you know, I'm just going to give them this bone to chew on and then they come in here because they've broken a really important tooth in their mouth."

A small piece of white turkey meat may not cause exceptional harm for animals, but they should stay away from specifically the turkey skin, and any gravy or casserole dishes.
