A body has been found after a major search for a 28-year-old woman missing in the Outer Hebrides.

Dozens of people had joined the search for Shanahan MacInnes, a hairdresser missing from Balivanich who was last seen on Friday afternoon.

Police Scotland said her family had been notified after a body was found in the Aird area of Benbecula, a Scottish island, at around 1.05pm yesterday, with formal identification yet to take place.

‘The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscak,’ they said.

Writing on Facebook yesterday, a relative said: ‘We as a family are absolutely heartbroken and devastated with the news we have received today.

‘Shanahan’s passing was an extremely tragic accident. It was nobody’s fault.’

They added: ‘We are extremely upset…We would appreciate if we could all be left to grieve our beautiful darling Shanahan.’

Hairdresser Ms MacInnes was said by police to have disappeared in what was ‘extremely out of character’ on Friday.

She was last seen around 1.30am on Friday in the Tindill Road area of Balivanich.

Meanwhile searches are continuing in Stornoway for missing teenager Aleksandr Benga nearly a week after he was last seen.

The 16-year-old was last seen around 8.45am on Monday near to the water wheel within in the Lewis Castle grounds.

Police are urging anyone with information or dash-cam footage to come forward.

He is described as 6ft 2ins tall and of slim build with short brown hair. When last seen, he was wearing a beige jumper and black jeans. He had a yellow beanie hat with him.

Inspector David Hall said: “We are extremely concerned for Aleksandr, especially given the cold weather conditions lately.

‘We have reviewed CCTV and footage provided by the public, however we have been unable to establish the exact route he travelled after leaving the water wheel on the morning of Monday, 18 November.

‘To help us establish this, we would ask any drivers with dashcams who were either travelling on the A859 between Willowglen Road, Stornoway and Cameron Terrace, Lochs or on Pentland Road between 8.45am and 12pm on Monday, 18 November, to please contact us.’
