Gugliemo Vicario has undergone surgery for ankle fracture

The Italian international was part of Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday evening where he made a string of impressive saves to ensure his side left the Etihad Stadium with an emphatic victory.

Vicario completed the full ninety minutes of the Premier League clash but did undergo treatment in both halves of the match and was later spotted limping through the media mixed zone prior to leaving the stadium.

Within his social media update, he revealed that he sustained the injury during the first half of the match and expressed his disappointment over the time which he now must face on the sidelines.

What Vicario had to say about his injury

The Tottenham number one took to Instagram to post the following, along with a photo of himself in a hospital bed: “Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect. I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one.. I needed surgery.

“I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.

“A massive thank you to the doctors and the staff. The operation went well, and from tomorrow I’ll be working hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you again.

“Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love. See you soon on the pitch.”

Who will replace Guglielmo Vicario in goal for Tottenham?

Fraser Forster was always likely to start Tottenham’s Europa League match against AS Roma on Thursday night, as he has done so in each of the club’s last two European fixtures.

Now, the English international must look to fill the void left by Vicario until the January transfer window at the very earliest with Brandon Austin expected to become his understudy. Ange Postecoglou must then decide whether Luca Gunter or Alfie Whiteman will slot in as third-choice.

Tottenham’s lack of activity in the summer window to look to bring in a keeper who can at least push Vicario for his starting spot has come back to haunt them and they now face a nervous month and a bit at the very least if they are to address the issue.
