Three Afghan migrants killed by Iranian border guards in Sistan and Baluchistan

Independent Iranian media outlets, which often cover security events and widespread human rights violations in the eastern part of the country, have reported the deaths of three Afghan migrants in a shooting incident involving Iranian border forces.

The human rights organization Halwash cited its sources, reporting that on Saturday and Sunday of this week, November 23 and 24, at least three Afghan migrants were shot in the Saravan district of Sistan and Baluchestan province in Iran.

According to the report, the Afghan migrants were attempting to enter Saravan when Iranian border guards opened fire on them.

Halwash clarified that the migrants were trying to cross into Iran through informal routes with the help of local guides and smugglers.

Since August 2021, when a new wave of Afghan migration to neighboring countries began, there have been numerous reports of shootings and mass executions of migrants by Iranian border forces in the Saravan region alone.

In the past month, three deadly shootings by Iranian border forces targeting Afghan migrants in this region have been reported, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear due to the Iranian regime’s refusal to take responsibility for these mass killings of migrants.

The killing of Afghan refugees by Iranian border forces highlights the ongoing and brutal treatment of migrants, particularly those fleeing violence and instability in Afghanistan.

Despite possessing legal documents or seeking asylum, many refugees face deadly hostility at borders, reflecting broader patterns of human rights abuses and violations of refugee protection laws.

The situation of Afghan refugees in Iran is increasingly dire, with reports of forced deportations, killings, and the denial of basic protections under international law.

The international community must urgently intervene to ensure that refugees are treated with dignity and respect, their rights protected, and that governments like Iran are held accountable for violations of refugee rights and international conventions.
