Two Spurs stars singled out for praise in Sofascore Team of the Week
After an outstanding team performance, two Spurs stars were selected in Sofascore’s Team of the Week, with one player in particular receiving standout praise.
Tottenham’s win was deserving of recognition and praise
Tottenham Hotspur have a history of grabbing points against Manchester City. Some of those past wins did not feel entirely justified, but this was not the case.
While last weekend’s performance still featured a utilisation of counter-attacking football, it was a dominant display. Ange Postecoglou’s side still pressed high against the Premier League’s most fearsome opponent and even on the counter, attacked with purpose and intent.
The Spurs players also defended deep and aggressively as a unit. It was a team performance where any of the players could have been singled out, deserving individual praise.
Sofascore Team of the Week features two Spurs stars
Sofascore shared their statistically calculated Team of the Week on X, which featured two of Spurs’ senior players.
With scores of 8.3 and 9.2 respectively, Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison were named in the best XI of the week. These scores are derived from match stats. Vicario’s 5 saves and a clean sheet as well as Maddison’s two goals would have been instrumental in them receiving such high scores.
Furthermore, James Maddison was named Player of the Week. Included in their post, Sofascore said (Sofascore on X): “None were more impressive than James Maddison, who earned our Player of the Week award thanks to a brilliant display at the Etihad.”
Another Spurs player could have arguably been included
Maddison and Vicario deserve their praise. However, regardless of precisely how Sofascore calculates their match ratings, it feels like Dejan Kulusevski is a notable absence from this Team of the Week.
Kulusevski was rightfully praised by pundits after the game as he was arguably as influential in Tottenham’s win as Maddison was. Kulu’s tireless running, inch-perfect assist for Maddison’s opening goal and unbelievable dribble which led to Pedro Porro’s goal, should have earned his inclusion in a Team of the Week.
Sofascore’s ratings are likely heavily weighted towards goal scorers as every player ahead of the three defenders in the Team of the Week scored at least one goal. Nevertheless, the three points earned are likely more than enough reward for Kulusevski as he continues to cement himself as one of the Premier League’s leading attacking players.
