Aurora Borealis Northern Lights forecast for NYC on Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (PIX11) – After your fill of Thanksgiving dinner, you may want to head outside for an additional holiday surprise.

The Northern Lights may be visible over New York City on Thursday and Friday night, according to NOAA’s forecast.

A geomagnetic storm watch has been issued for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. During that time, a mass from the Sun erupts into space, which can cause the Aurora Borealis to be visible.

The lights will likely be visible from New York to Idaho after 5 p.m. on Thursday.

If you’re out to take in the lights, you may also catch a glimpse of the ongoing Geminid meteor shower. Meteors may be most visible around 2 a.m. under dark skies with no moon.
