Historic beach hotel nicknamed ‘Palace by the Sea’ reveals £16million revamp

AN ICONIC hotel in the UK right by the beach has revealed its huge £16million revamp ahead of its full opening next year.

The Grand Brighton was once dubbed the Palace by the Sea because of its grand interiors.

Having opened back in 1864 it celebrated its 160th anniversary this year.

And it is currently undergoing a huge £16million revamp, which started in January 2024 and is set to be finished by next year.

Called a “ripping-it-back-to-carcass renovation” all 205 rooms are being overhauled.

The rooms will have luxury marble bathrooms and blue-hued bedrooms set to “represent the sea and sky“.

Around 50 of the rooms have balconies, many with sea views.

Splash out for the Grand Suite on the seventh floor, which is set across two floors itself with a private gym and huge bath.

These are set to be fully open by March 2025.

And a new spa and gym will open by Easter with the main lobby area also being given a facelift.

Guests can dine at the on-site Cyan Brighton restaurant serving “classic British food with a twist” or the Victoria Bar & Lounge for a drink.

Famous guests have stayed at this hotel too.

This includes ABBA – who stayed before they won Eurovision in 1974 – as well as Charlie Chaplin, Prince Edward and Helen Mirren.

It has even featured in Coronation Street and Only Fools and Horses.

Previous guests have raved about the hotel, with may staying for big events such as birthdays.

One person said: “[It] the best room we have ever stayed in at this price point.

“The hotel itself is an architectural gem, they don’t build like this anymore.”

Another agreed: “We stayed at the Grand for our honeymoon. This is the best hotel I have ever stayed at.”

One even wrote: “After staying at the Grand for 24 years it never disappoints.”

Even if you don’t want to stay, you can book an afternoon tea at The Victoria Terrace.

The Sun’s Assistant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski recently visited Brighton.

“An obstacle course of boutiques, aptly known as The Lanes, is one of many attractions that gives Brighton its quirky reputation.

“Expect wonky houses, with some dating back to the 16th century.

“Along with antique and vintage bits, some shops are now cool lifestyle stores and cafes.

“Even better- its just a five minute walk from the beach.”
