St. Landry School Board member gives away turkeys for Thanksgiving
ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- One St. Landry Parish School Board member spends every Thanksgiving holiday frying over a dozen turkeys to give to families in need. This year is no different.
For nearly three decades, Anthony Standberry has given more than 200 families an extra reason to be thankful during the Thanksgiving season, and that's because every year he fries turkeys and gives them away. It's a tradition he said he's thankful he's able to do.
"Every year we've been doing as much as 20 turkeys to give away," Standberry said.
Standberry said he knows people are struggling. Because of this, he feels it's only right to be a blessing for those in need during the holidays.
"In this day and time, with prices going up on everything, it makes it rough on some families," he said.
Standberry said families throughout St. Landry Parish that are in need are chosen by churches that give their names.
"I go to some of the churches in the area and they'll pick a family and I'll get them to pick up the turkey and deliver it to that particular family," he said.
He said he starts frying the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and delivers them by Wednesday evening so families can enjoy a nice Thanksgiving dinner that Thursday. It's a tradition he said he wants to continue until he's unable. But by then, his family will continue what he's started.
"I learned that when you give, you receive and that's what we've been doing. We've been given and the Lord has continuously blessed me," he said.
