Williams Nominated for Broyles Award

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.– Arkansas defensive coordinator Travis Williams was one of 65 FBS assistant coaches to be nominated for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the best assistant coach in college football, the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Broyles Award was created in 1996 to recognize Coach Frank Broyles’ legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall-of-fame career as head coach at Arkansas (1958-1976).

During his second season in Fayetteville, Williams has engineered an Arkansas defense that recorded the Razorbacks’ first shutout since Oct. 20, 2018, during a season-opening win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in addition to limiting Tennessee to a season-low 14 points during a 19-14 victory over the fourth-ranked Vols on Oct. 5. Other highlights include forcing five turnovers during a win a 24-14 win at Williams’ alma mater Auburn (Sept. 21) and a 58-25 triumph at Mississippi State (Oct. 26). Williams’ defensive unit has also shutout opposing offenses during the first half of five games this season.

The 65 nominees in this year’s class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.

A selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists and an overall winner.

Arkansas concludes its regular season slate by traveling to Columbia, Mo., to take on the Missouri Tigers in the Battle Line Rivalry on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2:30 p.m. The matchup will be televised on SEC Network.
