The cancelled flights include BA services to Heathrow and Southampton as well as a string of Aer Lingus departures.

Belfast City Airport said: “Due to adverse weather conditions across Northern Ireland, there may be some disruption to flights due to arrive and depart.

“Please visit our website or contact the airline directly for the latest flight information.”

It comes after the mercury plunged to a punishing -9.2C in Braemar in the Scottish Highlands overnight.

A yellow fog warning is in force for a swathe of southern, central and western England until 11am this morning.

Commuters should expect difficult driving conditions along with train and bus delays.

Visibility could fall below 100 metres in some places and icy patches will pose an “additional hazard”.

Tonight will see clear spells in the east along with some more fog and frost.

There will be some patchy rain, drizzle and coastal gales in the west and north west.
