Wild Turkeys on Assateague Island
Photographer: Cindy SunSummary Authors: Cindy Sun; Jim Foster
Known for its wild ponies, Assateague Island is one of the barrier islands facing the Atlantic Ocean along the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Stretching some 37 miles (60 km) in length in portions of Maryland and Virginia, it's also home to an abundance of shore birds as well other winged fowl, including turkeys. This small rafter was spotted strutting about one of the vegetated sand dunes on Assateague. Hopefully they escaped the dinner table. Photo taken on September 21, 2024.
