7 long passes, 88% pass success: Amorim hails £54m Man Utd star as 'best' after surprise role vs Bodo/Glimt

Manchester United sealed a thrilling 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in Thursday night’s gripping UEFA Europa League showdown.

United got off to a blistering start, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring in the first minute.

The visitors fought back and scored twice, but two Rasmus Hojlund goals ensured Ruben Amorim’s first victory at United.

Bruno Fernandes played alongside Manuel Ugarte in a midfield pivot, allowing Mason Mount to operate as one of the attackers behind Hojlund.

Amorim revealed that Fernandes was deployed in a deeper role to control the tempo and switch play.

He said after the game (via BBC Sport): “You can feel he is the most experienced player.

“They played with the back four, and we tried to switch play all the time. Bruno is the best one doing that – he is a midfielder.

“If you see this game, Mason Mount always has his back to goal and it is hard – with Bruno he is better with the ball in front.”

Fernandes could start more often at the base of midfield

The £54 million-rated star endured a mixed evening against Bodo/Glimt. He was caught out of position for the visitors’ first goal.

The Red Devils dominated the early part of the game, but a quick transition allowed the visitors to equalise.

Sondre Fet laid off a rolling pass for Hakon Ejven, who placed it perfectly in the top-left corner of the net.

Fernandes was nowhere near Ejven, leaving a gap in what should have been his ideal position.

On the positive side, the Portuguese midfielder was more accurate with his ball distribution.

He achieved 88 percent passing accuracy and successfully played seven long balls. He attempted four shots, but only one of them was on target.

Amorim could use Fernandes in this position against opponents who sit back.

This would allow the manager to field another attacking player in the front three.

The United captain is renowned for his exceptional vision but must become more disciplined in his defensive responsibilities to excel in this role.
