Ange Postecoglou talks about Tottenham January transfer plans
Even though we are still over a month away from the January transfer window, Ange Postecoglou admits Tottenham have already begun planning for potential signings.
Tottenham squad’s weaknesses exposed
Spurs are dealing with a whole host of injuries at the moment and the absentees have exposed the lack of depth in the squad.
Postecoglou had to name several academy youngsters on the bench against AS Roma in order to fulfil the matchday squad quota.
With many of Spurs’ injured players not expected to be back for a while, the Lilywhites face a major challenge as they enter an extremely busy period of the season.
Tottenham have begun planning for January transfer window
A lot of Spurs fans will feel that the club need to reinforce the squad in multiple areas in January if Postecoglou is to have a chance of guiding the team to silverware this season.
The Tottenham head coach has now confirmed that he and the club’s technical director, Johan Lange, have begun planning for the transfer window, but he admitted that signings can prove quite complicated mid-season.
When asked if Spurs are thinking about January transfers, Postecoglou told Football.London: “We’re always planning, planning for every scenario.
“A lot of it will depend on where we are as a squad at that time. Between now and then, it is only really Romero and Van de Ven who will be back in that time frame, but Richy will hopefully be back in the New Year and we will just assess where we are squad-wise.
“Certainly, with Johan [Lange] I’ve already had a number of meetings for a strategy in January. I think last year we did a little bit of business which ended up helping us, but nothing concrete now because January is always tricky and it depends on where we are squad-wise.”
Ange Postecoglou admits need for a bigger Spurs squad
The 59-year-old suggested that teams need a much bigger squad nowadays than they did a few years ago, with the ever-growing nature of the fixture list now catching up with the players.
He suggested that footballers are getting overloaded and that the increasing prevalence of injuries is diminishing the quality of the overall product.
When asked if teams need bigger squads rather than streamlined ones, Postecoglou responded: “I think so and it is not just the fixtures, it is the attrition rate, we’ve got a lot of injuries, but a lot of clubs have. I think we’ve been talking about it for a while but at some point, it is going to come home to roost for all the powers that be because players are getting overloaded.
“There is no doubt about that, there is too much evidence. You’re either going to get a diminished product with the best players not out there or clubs will have to carry bigger squads to cater for the demands of it.”
