Some Social Security recipients got an extra check on Black Friday

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some Social Security recipients will be heading out the door with some extra money in their pockets on Black Friday.

That's because Supplemental Security Income payments were sent out on Nov. 29. Usually, SSI checks are given out on the first of every month, but due to Dec. 1 falling on a weekend – they have already been sent out.

You can apply for SSI if you're an adult or child who has little to no income or resources or if you have a disability, blindness or are age 65 and older.

How much you get paid is dependent on whether you're working or if you receive disability benefits, unemployment payments or pensions. The maximum payment is $943 for one person and $1,415 for a couple, according to the Social Security Administration.

The next SSI payment will be sent out on Dec. 31 due to Jan. 1 being a holiday.

Social Security payments will go up by 2.5% starting in January, which could lead to an extra $50 more a month in your wallet.
