Three non-aerosol dry shampoos that are great for your roots and the planet – and one leaves no residue

DRY shampoo is essential for my fine hair which can quickly get greasy.

While my go-to aerosol is great for my roots, it’s not so good for the planet. So, in an effort to be more sustainable, I’ve been trying out non-aerosol dry shampoo…

Budget

Klorane Eco-Friendly Dry Shampoo, 50g, £11.50, look fantastic.com: Out of the three, this hands down has the best packaging.

The large nozzle means it is the most similar in terms of application to traditional aerosol dry shampoos and you can quickly cover your whole head in a handful of sprays.

A little goes a long way so it’ll last forever. There is a noticeable white cast but if you do it before bed it’s gone by the morning.

What I didn’t love was the scent and that it left my scalp feeling dry, so it’s not one I reach for very often.

However, a great first step into non-aerosol dry shampoo.

Mid-range

Rehab Essential Dry Shampoo, 50g, £24, rehabyourhair.com: So I was a bit sceptical when I saw the tube- shaped bottle.

It is definitely harder to use – there’s less room for air to get inside and propel the powder out.

As I found out the hard way, if you accidentally hold the bottle horizontally the powder pours out freely, which is messy.

Despite that, it’s my favourite out of the three as it left virtually no residue once I’d massaged it into my head.

The others left my roots feeling slightly gritty, which I hate – although if you want more volume or your style to hold longer, that is useful.

Luxury

Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder, 45g, £45, spacenk.com: I’m a huge fan of Oribe, it’s one of the few brands that is actually worth the high-end price tag – but having said that I’m not convinced by this dry shampoo.

It’s the only one I’ve seen where you press the nozzle down, but the hole the powder comes out of is tiny.

This means that you have to use a lot of product to cover your whole scalp, which takes a lot of time and effort.

It also meant I had to work harder to disperse the powder with my hands, although if you only get greasy along your parting, then I think it would be great for a more precise application.
