Brennan Johnson outlines the one mistake he thinks Spurs are making
Tottenham’s current top goalscorer, Brennan Johnson, believes the way Spurs play suits him and the team as a whole – but it would be a mistake to diverge from Plan A.
Brennan Johnson is set for a personal record-breaking season
His 94th-minute goal against Manchester City brought Brennan Johnson’s goal total to 5 in the Premier League.
He has already matched his Premier League tally from last season and surpassed his goal total in all competitions. With many more fixtures still to be played, Johnson is surely set to achieve a personal best for goals scored in the top flight this year.
His increased scoring output seems to have been produced by more counter-attacking goals as well as an improved understanding of his role in the team.
Brennan Johnson on the importance of Spurs Plan A
Speaking to Optus Sport, Brennan Johnson has highlighted the Tottenham squad’s need to believe in their football the same way Ange Postecoglou does.
“I think we show that plan A can work when we beat these great teams like Man City and Man U like we have this season.
“I think all the guys here know that we have to be confident in the way we play and show that we can really do it.
“We can’t really come away from that because when we do that’s probably when we’re at our worst.
“There’s a lot of things in this system that suit me and allow me to score and really get involved with the team. So I think it definitely suits me really well and it’s a team I’m really happy to be playing for.”
Tactics draw criticism, but when it works, it really works
Tottenham Hotspur sit 6th in the Premier League table. However, they have scored the most goals and conceded the tied 3rd fewest. After each loss, an inquisition begins as to the cause. The conclusions often reached are; squad depth issues, missing player profiles, tactics being too demanding or being too naive.
However, Tottenham’s largest margins of victory against Everton, Aston Villa and both Manchester clubs show that when the team fully commit to the approach, they achieve results.
Transfers are always required to keep a team refreshed and strong and even the best teams can be undone, but when the Tottenham players work their hardest for each other, they are capable of beating anyone.
