Patriots’ Jabrill Peppers Makes Interesting Claim About Lost Captaincy

FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers returned to the field for the first time in seven weeks on Sunday, but something was missing.

Peppers was without a notable piece of flair.

New England stripped the captain’s patch from his jersey, changing the 29-year-old’s leadership status after he was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt list on Oct. 9. Peppers was removed early last week and ultimately made his gameday return, but as he continues to face multiple charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, it was decided to revoke his captaincy.

Peppers claims it was a mutual decision.

“That was a mutual decision between me and (Patriots head coach Jerod) Mayo,” Peppers said following the game. “I’m going to just leave it at that.”

The NFL’s investigation into claims against the 29-year-old is still open, as he has a trial date set for Jan. 22. Peppers’ attorneys have strongly refuted the allegations levied against him.

The Patriots didn’t allow his return to game action to come without drama, however, as they ultimately fumbled away what looked to be a sure victory to the Indianapolis Colts.

Peppers felt good to be back on the field, however, and hopes to remain there over the final month of the season.

“I felt pretty good,” Peppers said. “I’ve been out of it since Week 4. I haven’t been able to practice, or be around football, but I felt pretty good. I surprised myself.”
