December outlook: Here's the first month of winter

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- After one of the warmest Novembers on record, we head into December marking the beginning of meteorological winter, which is our coldest and driest season.

Central Texas hasn't had a "wetter-than-normal" month since July and we've been increasing our rainfall deficit ever since. At the same time, the drought continues to worsen for most of the area.

December 2024 forecast

The final December outlook from the Climate Prediction Center is a little more promising for wet weather with near-normal rainfall expected for most of Central Texas and a wetter pattern more likely in our eastern counties.

Even the temperature outlook only leans warmer rather than being a more solid bet, indicating lower confidence in temperatures being warmer-than-average.
