“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,” he said to the audience while onstage at the Dominion Theatre, via Daily Mail.
“I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,” he added.
His husband, David Furnish, reportedly helped him get down from the stage afterward.
“To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it,” he said during the speech.
“And, boy, it sounded good tonight!” he added. “Okay, thank you for coming!”
Elton wrote the score for The Devil Wears Prada, and the West End production opened on October 24. Vanessa Williams stars in the lead role as Miranda Priestly.
The charity event was in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Back in September, Elton revealed on Instagram that he was battling a serious optic infection that left him with “limited vision” in one of his eyes.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he said at the time.
During a Good Morning America interview in November, he revealed he could no longer see out of his right eye.
“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France,” he explained. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest.”
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK,” he added, “but I’m kind of stuck in the moment, because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric for start.”
Elton also recently addressed the possibility of touring again in the future.
