My boyfriend broke up with me after a year because I’m ‘too old’ for him
DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER a year together, my boyfriend broke up with me because I’m ‘too old’ for him.
To add insult to injury, he told me he’d never thought of me as his proper girlfriend. I’m heartbroken and can’t understand why I’ve wasted so much time on a man who treated me so badly.
I’m 34 and he’s 38.
We met online and at first he was so kind and charming, always complimenting me on my appearance and buying me little gifts.
But things soon started to go downhill. Although he told me he loved me all the time when we were together, I barely heard from him when we were apart.
He’d ignore my messages and calls and say I should stop being so needy. He called me nasty names.
And once he even blocked me for three days.
Things came to a head when I found he was still on the dating site he met me on – and he’d been seeing other women.
He told me he’d never been serious about me – according to him, we were just sleeping together – and our actual relationship was in my head.
He also claimed I was too old for him – even though he’s older. Apparently, he only goes out with girls in their twenties.
Then he blocked me again, this time for good.
I feel like such a fool. How can I get over him?
MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE
DEIDRE SAYS: You’re not a fool and you’ve done nothing wrong.
You just fell for a man who didn’t deserve you and who lied about his feelings when it suited him.
You’re certainly not old at 34. He’s clearly too immature to go out with someone his own age.
Tell yourself you’ve had a lucky escape and put this down to experience.
It will take time to heal but if you keep away from him, you’ll soon wonder what you ever saw in him.
My support pack, Mend Your Broken Heart, should help you to move forward.
