Apple released iOS18 in September, which as is customary, brought with it a wealth of new features to the iPhone.

But amidst the chatter about customizable home screens and RCS messaging, there’s a little-known feature on Apple’s previous instalment, the iOS17, which is being lauded for its health benefits.

The thoughtful health feature, called Screen Distance, is designed to help reduce eye strain and promote healthier screen habits by encouraging users to keep their iPhone or iPad at least 12 inches away from their eyes.

Apple knows how easy it is to fall into the habit of holding devices too close, especially when you’re focused on a game, video, or late-night scrolling. Therefore, Screen Distance steps in as a helpful reminder to maintain a healthy distance, protecting your eyes over time.

Using the front-facing camera and built-in sensors, Screen Distance measures the distance between your device and your eyes. If it detects that your screen is too close, a pop-up alert appears, instructing you to move the device farther away.

Once you adjust the distance, you can tap ‘Continue’ to exit the alert. Importantly, Apple ensures that no images or video are captured, and all data stays securely on your device.

How can I enable the Screen Distance feature?

Enabling Screen Distance is quick and easy. On any iPhone or iPad with Face ID running iOS 17 or iPadOS 17:

  • Tap Continue and then choose Turn On Screen Distance.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Screen Time and then select Screen Distance.

Once activated, the feature works automatically in the background. If you’re holding your device too close for an extended period—often around five minutes or less—a Screen Distance pop-up will appear. For many users, this serves as a gentle nudge to adjust their habits, especially during evening device use when we’re more likely to strain our eyes.

Although the feature is designed with kids in mind, it isn’t just them who seek to benefit from it – Screen Distance can be a helpful tool for anyone who wants to reduce eye strain and build healthier screen habits.

Small changes, like holding your device at a proper distance, can add up to big improvements in eye comfort over time.
