Flames threatened to consume historic buildings on the doorstep of Canterbury Cathedral after a fire broke out at a former Debenhams last night.

Even this morning, the narrow Guildhall and High Streets were so engulfed in smoke, residents and businesses were warned to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire started around 8pm on Monday, burning at such intensity the initial emergency was response was doubled.

Eight fire engines and two height vehicles remained on the scene this morning after the fire was put out.

Many of the buildings around the nearly 1,000-year-old cathedral date to at least the 1800s. Some are believed to have Medieval features.

The Debenhams branch closed nearly five years ago during the department store chain’s collapse.
