World Test Championship Points Table: Chances for India to participate in the final at Lord’s
India’s way to the finals of the World Test Championship has gained some speed as New Zealand lost to England, opening some path for a clear qualification as a result. On top of that, since the Indian team won the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, they will be looking to keep this pace and make way towards the final for the third time.
Indian team still face a few important barricade and are also mainly dependent on Sri Lana and South Africa to secure their spot in the finals. Anything that is less than a 3-1 series win is going to make the situation complicated, and is going to result in the qualification being dependent on the performance of Sri Lanka and South Africa.
The Indian team is currently touring Australia to play in a five-match Test series, and their performance is going to have a huge impact on the chance of the visitors qualifying for the tournament.
Here is a breakdown of the scenarios:
Winning the series in clear manner (5-0, 4-1, 4-0, or 3-0):
If Indian team can manage to achieve one of the dominant scores from this series, they are going to directly qualify for the WTC Finals without having to be dependent on the results of other teams.
Winning 3-1:
If India wins the series with one match lost, they will still qualify unless South Africa wins over Sri Lanka in their home grounds during the second Test.
Winning 3-2:
If Indian team wins the series with 2 matches lost and want to stay in the competition, Sri Lanka would be needing to draw at least one game against Australia in the upcoming series.
Draw of the series 2-2:
If the five match series comes out as a draw of 2-2, there will be a couple instances for India to qualify:
- If South Africa wins the series over Sri Lanka with the island nation finishing one match as a draw, i.e. with a series win of 2-0.
- After thee 2-0 series, Sri Lanka must finish their upcoming series against Australia with at least a score of 1-0.
