Waterloo Road

Waterloo Road is a minimal home located in Melbourne, Australia, designed by C. Kairouz Architects. The residence is part of a cluster of revitalized and newly constructed homes by the firm, exemplifying a harmonious blend of simplicity and luxury. The design brief called for a space that strips away excess, focusing instead on elements that foster a sense of calm and positivity. With a monochromatic palette and a minimalist ethos, the home is designed to heighten the sensory experience, offering moments of stillness and retreat. For Kairouz, Waterloo embodies his design philosophy, marrying function with a deep appreciation for materials and textures. Achieving this vision posed several challenges. The goal was to create a home where every element—whether concrete, timber, or textiles—served both a functional and sculptural purpose.

Textural layers of linens, suede, lambswool, leather, and stone introduce warmth and depth to the minimalist interior. Iconic mid-century furniture from Italian and Australian designers, along with a striking piece by artist Tom Adair in the entryway, anchors the space with character and intention. The layout prioritizes fluidity and balance, with large glazing panels that frame the northern and western light, bathing the interiors in a natural glow. A landscaped terrace extends seamlessly from the interior, softening the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Thoughtful detailing, such as full-height pivot doors, shadow-line skirting, and gently curved walls, enhances the sense of flow, ensuring a cohesive and understated elegance throughout.
