Man Finds Abducted Infants While Checking His Mailbox
An Indiana “good samaritan” rescued two kidnapped children while going to check his mail, USA Today reported.
Robert Deane was headed to his mailbox on Monday when he spotted two children’s car seats abandoned in a ditch. When he went to inspect, he found two infant girls, aged four and five months, sitting in the chairs. They had been abducted when the car was stolen earlier that day. Deane’s home was roughly four miles from the location of the crime.
"I'd do it again," Deane said. “If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something (and) do something.”
Authorities are unsure for how long the infants were outside, but temperatures on Monday were as low as 27 degrees. "It's cold out here," said Indianapolis police spokesman William Young. "Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside? It's extremely cold, and we're still in our early stages of trying to figure out who was responsible for this."
Police are still searching for the culprit(s) responsible for stealing the car. “The plate number on the vehicle is 364CMU. If you see this vehicle, please call 911 immediately,” police urged nearby residents. The car is a 2013 Hyundai Sonata.
“He did what any good person would do," Young commanded Deane’s efforts. "He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome that we wanted. I can't thank that good samaritan enough. We don't have a suspect in custody, but that will be our next priority is figuring out who is responsible for this particular incident."
