MLB Rumors: Juan Soto Takes Major Step In Free Agent Decision
The Boston Red Sox, just like every other team pursuing Juan Soto, are probably paying close attention to every move the superstar outfielder makes.
Well, it appears Soto made progress in reaching a decision on where he will play next.
Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, told reporters Tuesday from Dodger Stadium — he was there for Blake Snell’s introductory press conference — that his client is narrowing down the list of possible destinations. Boras didn’t reveal which teams have been exiled from the Soto sweepstakes.
“When you’re going through these things, he’s just got a lot of information to meld through,” Boras told reporters, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich. “We’ve had meetings with a number of franchises. He’s begun the process of eliminating teams and doing things. Juan is a very methodical thinker, so we’ll see, but I don’t think anything is imminent in the near future.”
The Red Sox along with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Dodgers are all viewed as “serious” contenders for Soto. Rosenthal and Drellich noted that teams still in the running for Soto have made offers of over $600 million in an effort to land the 26-year-old.
There’s been no concrete timeline laid out for when Soto will pick his destination. According to Rosenthal and Drellich, Soto is expected to make his massive decision by the end of next week’s Winter Meetings. But they didn’t rule out Soto possibly coming to a decision quicker than that and choosing his next MLB home before the Winter Meetings begin.
