Lafayette gets ready to host Sun Belt Championship
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- For the first time since 2021, Cajun Field will be the site of the Sun Belt Conference Football Championship. While Louisiana and Marshall are preparing for the big game, so are UL Athletics and fans who want to make this a game and an experience no one will want to forget.
"Sales are going well. We're expecting a good crowd and hopefully they'll all be wearing red and being loud," said UL Deputy Athletic Director Trey Frazier.
Jody Merrell and Spencer Comeaux are longtime tailgaters for home games. He said events like this is important for the city.
"This is what Lafayette needs right now. They need a bowl. They need to win at something, and we are winning," Merrell said.
"It's going to help the economy," Comeaux said. "People are going to go out to different venues. Food stuff afterwards, going to have hotels and stuff. The excitement is definitely there. It's definitely good for our economy to have and host."
Frazier said the Sunbelt Conference will control the flow of the game, but the UL gameday will deliver the experience everyone is hoping for.
"Outside of that, our season ticket holders could buy their same season ticket locations or same parking spots or same tailgates, all that kind of fun stuff," Frazier said.
Kick off for Saturday's game is at 6:30 p.m.
