Salem officials warn residents after confirmed cougar sighting at Minto-Brown Island Park
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Salem city officials have confirmed the presence of a cougar at a conservation area along the Willamette River.
Authorities said the cougar was sighted in the Minto-Brown Island Park following other unconfirmed reports of cougar sightings in the area.
Salem Parks Field Supervisor Matthew Johnston said people should exercise extra caution during dawn and dusk when cougars are most active.
"He is actively using the game trails,” Johnston said in a statement.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has a number of recommendations to both avoid encounters with cougars and what to do if you see one.
To avoid coming across a cougar, stay alert, make noise, keep dogs on leashes and carry bear spray just in case.
If you do encounter a cougar from a distance, calmly leave the early, stay calm if they come close, maintain eye contact with the cougar and pick up any children with you without breaking eye contact with the cougar. Back away slowly, don't run, make yourself bigger. If they approach, clap your hands. If they attack, fight back with rocks, sticks, bear spray, or other objects.
More information about what to do if you encounter a cougar can be found on ODFW's website.
