Storm Darragh has made landfall in Britain, leaving a trail of destruction on one of the busiest weekends in the run-up to Christmas.

Millions of people received a ‘stay indoors’ alert as the Met Office issued a rare ‘danger to life’ red wind warning for the early hours of Saturday.

Tens of thousands are without power and trains have been cancelled amid winds of 90mph. National Highways has closed the QEII Bridge at the Dartford Crossing in England’s southeast, and sporting events – including football matches and Aintree Races – have been called off. Winter Wonderland announced an emergency closure on Saturday and will not reopen today.

Multiple airports have also been affected by the freak weather, with delays and cancellations of flights reported at Heathrow and Manchester Airport.
