Sunil Gavaskar REVEALS how 1983 World Cup heroes plan to support struggling Vinod Kambli

New Delhi: Known once as the cricketing prodigy and at times even the more talented of his friend Sachin Tendulkar, it has been a sad spiraling down ever since. Recently he attended a tribute function to coach Ramakant Achrekar and stood visibly battling to remain upright while his words were a jumble. Reports have emerged that the 1983 World Cup-winning team, led by Kapil Dev, is coming together to assist him. Sunil Gavaskar, a member of that iconic team, has confirmed that they will support Kambli in his time of need.

In an interaction with India Today, Sunil Gavaskar confirmed that the 1983 World Cup-winning team is indeed looking to support Vinod Kambli. However, he emphasized that their goal is not just to “help” him, but to take care of him and assist him in getting back on his feet.

Gavaskar also revealed that the Kapil Dev-led 1983 World Cup team is highly aware of the need to support players who are financially struggling, and they are committed to helping those in need get back on their feet.

“I think the ’83 Team is very conscious of our younger players. They are like our sons. We are very concerned about our cricketers, particularly when fortune deserts them. So, I dont think the word I want to help him is right. What the ’83 team wants to do is take care of him, and help him to get back on his feet. How we will do it, we will see in the very near future. We want to take of him, of cricketers on whom fortune is not smiling on them sometimes. That’s want the ’83 group want to do,” Gavaskar said.

In an interview with The Times of India, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, another member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, revealed that Kapil Dev had made it clear that the team would only assist Vinod Kambli if he first checked into rehab. The report also mentioned that Kambli had been to rehab 14 times, but unfortunately, none of those attempts had been successful.

“Kapil (Dev, captain of the 1983 team) has told me clearly that if he wants to go to rehab, then we are willing to help him financially. However, he has to check into rehab himself first. Only if he does that, we are ready to foot the bill, irrespective of how long the treatment last” said Balwinder Singh Sandhu.
