Phillips Reacts to Kidderminster Penalty Defeat

AFC Fylde Head Coach Kevin Phillips spoke to Coasters TV after Fylde were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Kidderminster Harriers on penalties.

Nick Haughton and Charlie Jolley scored in normal time to get the Coasters through to spot kicks, but three missed penalties from Phillips’ side meant Fylde were knocked out in the third round.

Speaking to Coasters TV, Phillips said: “I think the penalties probably summed up where we are at the minute.

“I tried to give players a chance today, those who hadn’t had many minutes, especially with one eye on Tuesday which is a massive game for us. So I moved some bodies around today and giving some the opportunity to go and prove to me that they should be in the starting XI.

“The conditions were terrible today and affected the game massively. I wouldn’t say it was a game of two halves but they played to the conditions much better than we did in the first half. Before we know it, we were 2-0 down in a really disappointing start to the game and then it’s about, can we get ourselves back into it.

“We wanted to play the way we play, with the ball on the floor especially kicking into the wind, and we managed to get a goal through being brave, breaking the line and a quick counter attack led to a goal for us.

“We prepared them for the second half and changed the system, bringing three new bodies on in the difficult conditions and it made a difference. It’s just disappointing that we didn’t create any clear cut chances to go and win the game once we had equalised.

“But you have to give credit to Kidderminster. They played the conditions really well, caused us some issues but ultimately, I’ve learnt a lot about the players today. It’s disappointing to go out on penalties but I think they summed up where we are at the minute.”
