Rumors swirl of Mike Gundy's tenure coming to an end
STILLWATER, OK — Is the Mike Gundy era over at OSU, or will he agree to a restructured contract and stay on?
Social media is reporting all sorts of things right now but so far, Oklahoma State University nor Mike Gundy have confirmed anything.
About half the people KFOR spoke with on campus say they are aware of the rumors around Gundy's tenure.
There are mixed feelings about the possibility of him leaving and how the university is going about it.
"My thoughts personally, he was here for, I think, 19 seasons and this is his first losing season, so that's a pretty good track record," Nolan Anderson, OSU student said.
For the first time since his first year as head coach back in 2005, Mike Gundy had a losing record with Oklahoma State.
This year will go down as his worst in his 19 years with the program after not winning a single conference game. The first time that has happened since 1994.
"It was a bit of a rough season, especially coming off of the previous one that we were pretty successful," Anderson said.
"It was kind of sad," Britney Oehler, OSU student said. "Being a senior, I would have like to see a little bit better outcome for our football team."
The OSU Board of Regents has reportedly asked Gundy to take a pay cut as part of a restructured contract, as well as a drop in is buyout, which is about $25 million currently.
However, some fans think it is a bit harsh for the university to come after Gundy like this after leading the program to eight 10 win seasons out of his 19 years.
"When we got here, he was kind of a local legend, so it's weird to see how it's changed," Emma Graddy, OSU student said.
On Wednesday, Gundy fired Offensive Coordinator Kasey Dunn and Defensive Coordinator Bryan Nardo.
According to ESPN, there have been discussions about firing Gundy for cause if he doesn't agree to the new contract, but it is unclear why he potentially could be fired for cause.
"Maybe this would be a little wakeup call, a little spark on the plug," Anderson said.
With the future of Oklahoma State football in limbo, fans can only wait and hope for something positive to come out of this.
"I'm hopeful for the future, just depending on who they bring in, but we'll see," Graddy said.
"I still think he's done a great job while he's been here," Anderson said. "Certain actions have consequences and this isn't like a horrible action, it was just he had a tough year and he didn't expect what happened."
We reached out to the university for comment but we did not hear back.
Gundy's current contract runs through 2028.
