Do tree-shaped Reese’s actually taste better than a regular peanut butter cup?
(NEXSTAR) — You’re likely familiar with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, the orange-packaged milk chocolate and peanut butter candy that has been around for nearly 100 years. And if you’re a fan of Reese’s, you’re also likely to look forward to the holiday-shaped cups that come out multiple times throughout the year.
For select holidays, Reese’s will produce such shapes as the Christmas tree, the pumpkin, and the egg.
For years, fans of the confection have argued that Reese’s that come in such special shapes taste different than the traditional cups — but do they?
“Absolutely. The chocolate to peanut butter ratio is just so much better,” one user wrote on Reddit. Others in the same thread expressed their adoration for the pumpkin, Easter eggs, and tree shapes.
Whether or not you prefer the holiday Reese’s — some Reddit users said the cups were better, mostly because of the ridges — they do, in fact, taste different.
According to a company spokesperson, it’s all about “the unique, undeniable ratio of peanut butter to chocolate in each shape.”
Compare, if you will, a regular Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, sliced in half, that’s pictured below. On the right is a Reese’s in tree form.
You’ll notice that the regular Reese’s has a thicker, albeit inconsistent chocolate coating, especially near the top ridges and outer edge of the bottom. Meanwhile, the tree version has a relatively thin but even coat of chocolate and a thicker layer of peanut butter.
If you’re a fan of the holiday Reese’s, you need not stock up for long. Retailers will likely soon be stocking the next shape, hearts for Valentine’s Day. After Valentine’s Day, the next available special Reese’s shape are the Easter eggs.
After that, however, Reese’s fans will find themselves in a holiday-shaped drought until Halloween. At least for now, Reese’s doesn’t make any summer holiday-shaped peanut butter and chocolate candies.
When asked why Reese’s does not have a holiday-shaped cup for Thanksgiving, the company told Nexstar that “right now, we’re just keeping things classic.” They added, however, that it is not “off the table.”
Could you soon be stocking up on peanut butter and chocolate pumpkins, Christmas trees, and turkeys? Only time will tell.
