‘We may see him come out of retirement’: Wladimir Klitschko said to be considering return to boxing

Wladimir Klitschko is contemplating a return to boxing in an attempt to break George Foreman’s record of becoming oldest heavyweight champion.

Former heavyweight titleholder Wladimir Klitschko hasn’t fought since a 2017 stoppage loss at the hands of Anthony Joshua, but he is at least considering a return to the sport according to K2 promoter Tom Loeffler.

Loeffler tells Sky Sports that he doesn’t want to speak for Klitschko and will leave it up to him to make any formal announcement, but suggests it’s something that’s being considered as Klitschko has always had a dream of beating George Foreman’s record of becoming the oldest fighter to win a heavyweight world title.

There are several potential options for Klitschko if he should seek out a shot at a heavyweight title, but fellow Ukranian Oleksandr Usyk wouldn’t be one of them. With that being said, someone like Daniel Dubois could be intriguing to Klitschko.

“He wouldn’t fight Usyk because that’s his countryman, but now with the likes of Daniel Dubois, and depending what happens, we may see him come out of retirement,” Loeffler said. “But we’ll let him make any announcement. A lot depends on what happens December 21.”

December 21, of course, is the date for the heavyweight title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, and should Fury win Klitschko could potentially seek out the rematch with Fury that he never got to have following his 2015 loss.

“There was a rematch clause there with Tyson Fury, but after winning that fight Tyson went off the rails, so Wladimir never got the rematch he was supposed to get contractually. So, you never know, if that happens down the road it would be a tremendous fight,” he said.

For now Klitschko appears to be waiting to see how the heavyweight division shakes out, but Loeffler says if he does intend to return he’ll have his full support.
