Construction continues on east Columbus library branch
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The new Barnett branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library is one step closer to completion.
Members of the library watched the last steel beam be placed on the new library branch, even taking the time to sign their names on the beam.
The Barnett branch, located at 3434 E. Livingston Ave., originally opened in 1992 but with this new construction, it will nearly double the current building's size.
Columbus Metropolitan Libraries CEO Lauren Hagan notes libraries are a critical community asset, and this expansion is another way to provide more to surrounding families.
“We're always evolving to understand what our customers need and addressing that through these building projects,” Hagan said. “We really also have been intentional about making bigger investments in communities that have been under-resourced. Traditionally, we recognize that the library has an important responsibility to provide resources.”
The new branch is expected to open in 2025 but there is a temporary Barnett branch, open Monday through Friday just down the street from the construction site.
The goal is to continue to make libraries a cornerstone for neighborhoods.
"Libraries are a critical community asset,” Hagan said. “We provide access to books, but also materials for workforce development. We help ensure that kids have the resources they need to learn to read and resources they need to be successful in school. We partner with a lot of organizations to bring other resources together for community members who have a variety of different needs.”
The Linden branch is also being expanded and two new branches are under construction.
