ASW Conversations: Meet your top right to repair advocate, Emily Holtby
Emily Holtby is new to the automotive aftermarket but she’s being thrown right into the fire.
Since she’s joined AIA Canada as its vice president of government relations, two bills have passed through Parliament to amend the Copyright Act that help with the right to repair movement and she’s been through the whirlwind experience of AAPEX in Las Vegas.
While at AAPEX, Holtby took time to sit down with Auto Service World and talk about her first couple of months on the job and what the learning curve has been like.
And she’s ready to tackle the issues that the auto care sector holds near and dear to its heart. Calling the Copyright Act amendments “a great first step,” she emphasized that more needs to be done.
“We’re taking a few different pathways simultaneously to try and achieve some sort of expansion on right to repair,” she said. “Because, of course, what’s missing from these two bills is the idea that the automakers must comply with releasing the data and that there’s enforcement penalties in place should they not release the data. And that’s missing from these two bills, of course. So that component is really, really essential.”
