France wants Israel to evacuate Syria buffer zone

The Foreign Ministry of France has urged Israel to pull out its troops from Syria buffer zone that separates Israel-controlled Golan Heights from Syria.

According to media reports, the Foreign Ministry in France has said on Wednesday that Israel must evacuate the buffer zone that separates Israel from Syria as it is a clear violation of an ongoing agreement.

“Any military deployment in the separation zone between Israel and Syria is a violation of the disengagement agreement of 1974,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.

“France calls on Israel to withdraw from the zone and to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the foreign ministry spokesman added.

According to a UN official that spoke with AFP, the Israeli forces have so far occupied seven positions in the buffer zone which is the breach of a 50-year-old agreement, which ended the 1973 war.

This comes as that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday he had ordered the army to “seize” the demilitarized zone in the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan Heights after rebels swept Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.
