Dick Van Dyke, 98, Details Harrowing Escape From Malibu Wildfires

Dick Van Dyke got candid about his terrifying escape from the ongoing Malibu wildfires, recalling to The Today Show on Dec. 12 how his neighbors “saved” his life.

“It was coming from the hill, you could see it,” the veteran entertainer said. “And oh my God, and we got out of here. I was trying to crawl to the car, I had exhausted myself, I couldn’t get up.” Luckily, his neighbors were close by and able to extract the nonagenarian from the blaze. “Three neighbors came and carried me out and came back and put out a little fire in the guest house and saved me,” the Mary Poppins star told the outlet.

On Dec. 10, Van Dyke posted on Instagram that while he and his wife were saved from the blaze, they lost track of their pets. “Arlene and I have safely evacuated,” he wrote, adding that one of their pets had gone missing during the event. “Bobo escaped as we were leaving,” he wrote. “We’re praying he’ll be okay and that our community in Serra Retreat will survive these terrible fires.”

But thankfully, Bobo’s story had a happy ending. “We found Bobo as soon as we arrived back home this morning,” Van Dyke added in the comments the following day. “There was so much interest in his disappearance that Animal Control was called in to assist. But, thankfully he was easy to find and not harmed.”

Van Dyke isn’t the only celebrity who’s had to evacuate their home amidst this latest rash of wildfires. Cher, as well as Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino, have had to flee their estates, in addition to thousands of other residents.
