Box truck loses control, hits fire truck on Michigan highway, video shows

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – Deputies in Michigan say multiple fire vehicles and a sheriff's office cruiser were hit Thursday morning as they were responding to a crash in Comstock Township.

The original crash took place on eastbound I-94 near the 80.5 mile marker, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. No one was hurt in that crash.

First responders were assisting when a 24-foot box truck jackknifed on the interstate while driving toward the scene.

Dashboard camera video released by the sheriff's office shows the semi-truck hitting the cruiser, smashing into a fire truck and rolling over. First responders can be seen running away from the fire truck in the moments following the crash.

A total of three Comstock fire vehicles and the cruiser were hit, according to deputies. No first responders were hurt, but the driver of the box truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A portion of eastbound I-94 was closed for hours before reopening around 10:50 a.m. Thursday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

"We urge everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during severe winter weather," the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post later on Thursday. "If you must be on the road, please use extreme caution, reduce your speed, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Your safety — and the safety of first responders — depends on it."
